Bar/Bat Mitzvah
The 7th grade Bar/Bat Mitzvah class is an extraordinary year for the children. Students meet on Wednesdays and Sundays for classroom programs. They study Chumash and issues related to Jewish ethics and identity; they spend time studying the Holocaust and the Jewish American experience; and they address issues related to becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah. 7th grade students also study cantillation, Torah and haftorot with tutors on Saturday mornings before services.
Bar/Bat Mitzvah Tutors
Many years ago, Rabbi Sager instituted a unique
method of Bar/Bat Mitzvah preparation and study through peer learning.
To supplement the instruction that the Rabbi and classroom teachers
provide, each student is matched with a trained, older student
for weekly tutoring. This process begins many months before a student’s
Bar/Bat Mitzvah and enables the student to work closely with a
very dedicated and capable young person. Very often, peer tutoring
results in special bonds forming between the student, the tutor,
and their families, all while under the supervision of the Rabbi
and an adult coordinator. This responsibility also provides an
opportunity for our teens to stay involved. Overall, peer tutoring
has proven to be a very effective and enjoyable approach in preparing
for the special day.
